Dan Hale's Christmas bonus was spent this year even before he hopped into his truck at the worksite to head home.
"Honey, I got the check. Go on ahead and order the mattress!" he said to his wife, Shannon.
He heard a few keystrokes and the click of a mouse on the other end of the phone.
"Done! See you soon, babe," she said excitedly and hung up.
Dan shifted in the seat of his Dodge and daydreamed about the sleep he would have once the new mattress came in. He hurt his back the year before, and nothing seemed to help it. The last treatment he and Shannon tried was chiropractic care. It decreased his discomfort, but only for a day or so until he had to go back to the office to be readjusted.
And it cost more than $500 a month.
So, the Hales decided to take a chance and forego treatments for a few months to save for what the Internet called a miracle mattress – to the tune of $2,500. Fortunately, the mattress came with a lifetime warranty. They couldn't wait for their first full night's sleep in years.
Protect your mattress – and your investment
The mattress was delivered a few days later. As they sat on the bed after dropping it onto the box spring in the master bedroom, Shannon recited a laundry list of concerns she had about their investment. The warranty made her feel secure, but it would be void if the mattress were soiled. She knew she had to buy a mattress protector, but it would have to tick several boxes and protect against the elements of the Hale household.
1) Dan was a sweaty sleeper.
He tossed and turned all night, twisting around and soaking the sheets all the way down to the mattress. There's no way Shannon would let Dan sweat all over a new mattress that cost as much as a mortgage payment. She also simply wanted her husband to be comfortable and sleep through the night. He deserved it.
2) The kids were snackaholics.
The Hales' favorite way to wake up is all together in the big California King, and the kids require some distraction to make it a peaceful morning for everyone. Every morning, Shannon padded into the kitchen to start the coffee maker for Dan, grabbing some tubes of applesauce and sippy cups of juice on her way back to the bedroom. Then, she waited for them to wake up and blow in like a tornado.
You can imagine the ensuing spills and stickiness.
3) Gordie, the German Shepherd/Husky mix.
Gordie's a giant, gentle, cuddly ball of drool and fur. He also loves to jump up on the bed and in the past, that led to craters and lumps developing. The Hales’ new mattress will keep its shape no matter what, or it will be replaced by warranty - but only IF the mattress is unsoiled. As hard as the family tries, Gordie is a joyful dope with perpetually muddy paws.
Regular protector = big disappointment
So, Shannon purchased a mattress protector. It was pricey – around $150 for the California King size – but the package made some big promises, like waterproof technology and breathability.
Two days later, the Hales' five-year-old drifted off to sleep during early morning cartoons snuggled between his parents and had an accident.
It was immediately apparent that the product's packaging was mistaken. When Shannon stripped the bed, the mattress already had a small stain. Not enough to void the warranty, but almost. As it turns out, the "waterproof technology" was just crinkly plastic that squeaked and creaked all night.
"I was at my wit's end. We were broke and tired and needed a good night's sleep," said Shannon. She had exhausted all her usual avenues for deals and tips, except for one: her Facebook Moms Group.
As soon as she posted her query, the Facebook Moms flooded the post with helpful comments. They were all raving about the same product: The Sleepsteady Mattress Protector.
"It's the best quality at the absolute best price!"
"This miracle product protects against everything, including pet dander!"
"It actually adds softness. I'm a sensitive sleeper, and the topper is soft and quiet. No more squeaking or creaking."
Of the 30 comments on Shannon's post, about 20 expressed a simple emotion: relief. This mattress protector worked.
Some of the women had even posted pictures of the product and its packaging.
Shannon learned that the mattress protector was 100% waterproof and beyond soft. The company used Premium Tencel technology to add a layer of comfort to the protector.
Tencel also helps wick away moisture from the body. When Shannon read this, she started to get excited.
“I love my husband, but I hate sleeping in wet sheets. I was so hopeful about Sleepsteady,” said Shannon.
Finally, she clicked on a photo gallery one of her Facebook friends put together for her. It showed the mattress protector on a variety of beds in the woman’s cottage. It fit snuggly and looked great on every bed in the house.
Taking the plunge – and staying dry!
Shannon trusted her group, but if she was going to spend even a penny more of the Hales' hard-earned money, she would do her own research. She spent another hour on the computer and, despite her hesitance to be fooled again, clicked "Buy Now."
What really sold her was the Sleepsteady satisfaction guarantee. The company pledged to offer a full, 90-day refund if she happened to be unsatisfied with the mattress protector. Shannon hoped she wouldn't need to return the product but was impressed by Sleepsteady's willingness to stand behind it.
The Sleepsteady Mattress Protector showed up two days later, exactly as described.
"I was worried we'd be duped again, and the thought was just heartbreaking. I'm in a lot of pain and need some relief, but my wife is dealing with a lot, too. She keeps the household together, not to mention clean. Between my pain and our financial stress, she was being spread too thin,” said Dan.
That changed as soon as the couple spread the mattress protector over the California King.
Every single one of the Hales' concerns evaporated.
The fitted sheet mattress cover fit snug and tight, without slipping or bunching. The side skirt was also thick and stretchy – a perfect fit for their oversized mattress.
Shannon smoothed her hand over the soft fabric, patting the mattress beside her, motioning for Dan to sit.
"Oh, honey, this feels wonderful. It's so soft that I can't wait to fall asleep tonight," he said, kissing her cheek.
Shannon's fellow Facebook Moms turned out to be right – you can feel the luxury of the Tencel fibers in the mattress protector. They also work to wick moisture away, keeping Dan – and Shannon – cool and dry.
Finally, a full night’s sleep
The following day, Shannon rolled over to look at Dan, sleeping peacefully for the first time in years. His breathing wasn't labored, and he seemed to be in less pain. The new, high-quality mattress was working, and now it was protected by the Sleepsteady protector.
She smiled and closed her eyes, deciding to doze just a little longer...until she felt Gordie leap into bed, all slobber and mud from the night before.
A few days ago, the situation would have reduced her to tears. She would worry about the mess, the moisture, the dander, everything. Instead, she laughed. The new luxury mattress might have her husband's back, but Sleepsteady had hers.
Now, she’s telling everyone. Shannon even shared Sleepsteady’s latest promotion with her Facebook Moms, and they’ve purchased dozens.
Sleepsteady is offering 20% off its mattress protectors this winter, but only for a limited time.
COVID-19 is still causing issues for manufacturers and suppliers, so if you’re in need of protection, you’ll want to act fast.
Don’t leave your mattress unprotected! The longer it’s bare, the more likely a spill or stain will happen, voiding your mattress warranty.
